An Overview of Caregiver Fatigue
Caregiver fatigue, also known as caregiver burnout, is a state of chronic physical and mental depletion caused by the persistent responsibility of caring for a loved one in need. Here, the home care providers at Avila Home Care detail common symptoms of caregiver fatigue and how to mitigate these feelings by prioritizing your own health so that you can best serve others.
Caregiver Fatigue Can be Caused by a Variety of Life Circumstances
Caregiver fatigue occurs when a caregiver is consumed by tending to the needs of a loved one and subsequently neglects their own self-care and health in the process. This condition can be caused by many factors. Sometimes, caregivers have the responsibility of taking care of a loved one round-the-clock, which results in sleep deprivation and chronic stress that ultimately leads to burnout. Other times, the caregiver may be confused or frustrated about their role; in other words, some caregivers find themselves thrown into their role without choosing it, and may find it difficult to uphold the responsibility of caring for their loved one. Some caretakers may feel unappreciated by the loved one they are caring for if they feel they are not receiving any gratitude for their service. No matter the reason a caregiver may be feeling fatigued in their role, there are sure signs and symptoms of caregiver fatigue that signify a caregiver may need to take a step back and consider their own health and wellbeing.
Caregiver Fatigue May Be Accompanied by Physical or Emotional Symptoms
The most common symptoms of caregiver fatigue include physical, mental and emotional exhaustion; becoming sick more often; changes in mood, sleep patterns or appetite; withdrawal from other loved ones; chronic irritability; and resentment towards the loved one in their care. In severe situations, a burnt-out caregiver may even experience strong feelings of hopelessness or helplessness; depression and anxiety; excessive alcohol or drug intake; or even suicidal thoughts or actions. If you are a caregiver and notice any of these signs or symptoms of caregiver fatigue, it is important to immediately take a step back and consider the state of your own mental and physical health. It may even be beneficial to speak to a medical doctor or therapist about your individual experience.
Caregiver Fatigue Can Be Treated With Proper Self-Care
We know that it can be extremely difficult to prioritize your own self-care when you have a loved one who relies on you. However, you cannot be there for others unless you care for yourself first. There are many ways to combat feelings of caregiver fatigue including staying healthy through clean eating, adequate sleep and regular exercise; setting healthy boundaries that respect your limits and needs; talking about your problem with a trustworthy family member or friend; soothing your negative feelings with meditation, journaling or other healthy coping mechanisms; and even speaking with a professional. Above all, do not let your role as caretaker become your entire identity—remember that everyone needs time for themselves.
