Human Clinical Trials of New Therapy To Treat Parkinson’s Disease to Begin in 2020

Parkinson’s disease has continuously plagued the elderly community and, thus far, there has not been any known cure. However, The University of Queensland has developed a new form of therapy that has halted the development of Parkinson’s disease in multiple animals, and promising human clinical trials are planned for the future. The home care providers at Avila Home Care discuss the effects of Parkinson’s disease and the human clinical trials that are planned for this coming year.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain. This disorder leads to the potential of rigid muscles, slurred speech, tremors and varying levels of immobility depending upon the stage of the disease. There is no known cause of Parkinson’s, and while certain medications can help slow the development of the disease, they do not completely halt its progress. Around 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year and men are 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed than women. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed, it can be both emotionally and physically taxing for all involved.

Is a Cure On the Horizon For Parkinson’s Disease?

Thanks to The University of Queensland, human clinical trials are set to start in 2020 for a form of therapy that has already hindered the progression of Parkinson’s disease in various animals. According to the study, the development of the molecule MCC950, when given orally, stops the progression of the disease. Researchers found that the NLRP3 gene lit up in Parkinson’s patients, which led to the loss of brain cells. When the MCC950 molecule was given, it blocked the activation of the gene, stopping the progression of brain cell loss and improving motor functions. This study is promising for the future prevention and elimination of Parkinson’s disease and, although there is a long way to go before this therapy is publicly available, symptoms of Parkinson’s disease could soon be alleviated, and the disease ultimately cured.

How Can You Manage Parkinson’s Disease Currently?

While research continues to progress, there are ways to monitor and manage Parkinson’s symptoms if you or a loved one has already been diagnosed. A healthy diet and regular exercise routine can improve mobility and joint health for both the short and long-term symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. While there is no medication that cures Parkinson’s disease, certain medications can reduce the pain and discomfort associated with the disease. If applicable, consider participating in clinical trials as well, which helps both you and dedicated researchers work to find a cure. Finally, as the disease progresses, make sure you have a qualified and compassionate healthcare team established. Avila Home Care offers a variety of services for your healthcare management and day-to-day needs.
